Dried Goji Berries: Healthy Goodness You Can Trust
Many of the health food people are making claims to miracle health foods. From dietary supplements to new food products, there is something out there for every ailment and that will sound at least intriguing if not necessary for any person. There are standards established by the Food and Drug Administration, but many times you can't be sure of how much of the hype is marketing and how much of it is actually true. This is why it's good to do a little research into any product before you get sucked in by the claims made on the packaging.
Sometimes you may find that you have no confidence in what has been promoted, but there are ways to build up that trust through research more information. For example, many herbs are said to have special properties that can affect your mood, cholesterol, blood pressure and many other things, but it is best to see what types of studies have been conducted what the results show. However, there are some, although few, products that have not been extensively studied scientifically, but can still be trusted. One of these is the dried goji berry.
Goji berries are cultured and grown in China, Tibetan land and the country of the Himalayas. They are a bright red colored berry that is about 1-2 centimeters long. There are two varieties, which are very similar, but one is sweeter and one is little bitter. The Chinese have been drinking tea, eating soups and rice dishes made from these berries as well as eating them fresh for thousands of years. For almost as long, they have been known there for their benefit to the heart, eyes, immune system, and neurological protection.
Goji berries only became popular in America in recent years, although they have grown and been used in England for hundreds of years. They are usually imported from China and are therefore not eaten fresh, but dried or in the form of a powder or juice. Dried goji berries are the best option if you want to be sure of what you're eating.
Dried goji berries look like red raisins. They can be about the same texture as raisins but are sometimes dried further until they are hard. They have a sweet and sour taste, and are sometimes included in granola or trail mixes. These berries can be used in baking, cooking or eaten raw.
Most Goji berry juices are not 100% juice, which is a good reason to stick with the fruit itself if you want to know how much you are actually getting. The dried goji berry is a great snack and contains many essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, as well as amino acids, antioxidants and many other beneficial nutrients.
As previously stated, very little research has been done on the effects of goji berries, but there is no question that they qualify as a superfruit because of their extremely high nutrient content. Also, many people who eat these berries every day experience improvements in eyesight, sexual function, mood, sleeping habits and energy levels. With recommendations like that, and the assurance that these little fruits are full of nature's goodness, you can't go wrong.
