Enjoy Raw Goji Berries At Home!
You probablyhave seen it before in some Chinese restaurant and medicinal shops; goji berries definitely qualify in the health food world as a superfruit. These red berries are jam packed with essential nutrients and can provide many health benefits when eaten on a daily basis. However, a problem arises when we realize that goji berries are grown in China! Fortunately there are ways to get them from there to here.
A common way that goji berries are eaten outside of China is dried. In this form the berries resemble red raisins. They can be about the same texture as raisins, but are sometimes dried further until they are hard, and have a sweet and sour flavor.
Dried goji berries are not the only way they are marketed. You can also purchase a powder or extract of the berries as well as their juice. Goji berries in all these forms provide the nutritional benefits of the goji berry, while still being able to be shipped to the west.
Unfortunately, it would appear that only the Chinese can enjoy raw goji berries, as they won't stay fresh for shipment around the world. However, this is not the case! True, only the Chinese can enjoy fresh, raw goji berries grown in China, but what if they were grown more locally? The fact of the matter is, they can be!
There are a few companies that sell goji berry seeds online. On some of the sites you can even purchase a one or two year old plant! These are shipped to your home to be planted by you. Of course, the seeds or plants come with complete instruction on how to care for the plant in order to ensure that you get the best goji berry crop that you can.
When the seeds are first planted they need to be taken special care of. However, as the plant begins to grow, it gradually becomes more and more hardy. It thrives in direct sunlight and can handle temperatures of minus fifteen all the way up to one hundred degrees Fahrenheit!
It takes about four or five years for the plant to grow to maturity, but they often start producing fruit even after a year or two, depending on the conditions. This means that in a few short years you can be enjoying the satisfying health benefits of these tasty raw goji berries.
The plant can grow to ten or twelve feet high, which means that it needs some extra care in terms of pruning. It takes some serious cutting back to keep the plant producing top quality goji berries, but is well worth the effort for the healthy, sweet snack you will have available from June to October!
If you are interested in trying raw goji berries, no need to take a trip to China! You can enjoy these sweet, juicy berries in the comfort of your own garden!
